More than half the baby shampoo, lotion and other infant care products
analyzed by a health advocacy group were found to contain trace amounts
of two chemicals that are believed to cause cancer, the organization
said yesterday.
Some of the biggest names on the market, including Johnson & Johnson
Baby Shampoo and Baby Magic lotion, tested positive for 1,4-dioxane or
formaldehyde, or both, the nonprofit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
reported. (Entire Story) Toxic Waters - A Series About the Worsening Pollution in American Waters and Regulators Response
Environmental Working Group has compiled drinking water contamination
on over 39751 water utilities in 42 states through contact with state
environmental and health agencies. For the first time ever, you will
see how your tap water stacks up against other cities and towns
throughout the US.
Ask
any person on the street what image comes to mind in responseto the word "pollution" and it’s liable to be a
belchingsmokestack or an idling car. Few would
say a familiar overstuffedsofa or a friendly
toy such as a rubber duck. Yet increasinglythe
most worrisome and damaging pollutants affecting the healthof
Canadians are not the odoriferous industrial-grade varietythat
visibly waft from Canada’s dwindling manufacturingcentres
(though these remain important), they are the invisibletoxic
ingredients of umpteen consumer products that litter ourhomes
and offices. Some of these have achieved recent notoriety. For
example, bisphenol A (BPA) — a known endocrine disruptor—
is a component of polycarbonate plastic in baby bottlesand
in the resin linings of virtually every tin can in everyCanadian
kitchen cupboard. (Entire Story)

Study by Environmental Group Shows Toxic Chemicals End Up in Blood
Samples
May
1, 2009 -- Up to 48 toxic chemicals commonly used in everyday consumer
products have shown up in blood and urine samples of five prominent
women environmental activists, according to a study by the
Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization devoted to
protecting human health and the environment.
"Testing was primarily targeted
toward products used in everyday
consumer products that have escaped regulation under the Toxic
Substances Control Act," Anila Jacob, MD, MPH, a senior scientist with
the organization, said at a news briefing. (Entire Story)
Green Tip:
Junk Mail? Opt Out!
Do
your
trees frown when you go to your mailbox? Here are some tips
for opting out of junk mail.
1.When
companies ask for personal information, ask them how that information
is used and if it is sold. Many times you can opt out of
giving personal information and avoid further junk mail.
2.Opt
out of unsolicited mail including unsolicited credit card offers,
direct marketing offers, and companies you have done business with in
the past:
(July
31) - A Florida man who wanted a pristine toilet ended up in the
hospital after mixing a potentially deadly combination of cleaning
fluids.
Michael
Newton, 44, of St. Petersburg, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center on
Thursday morning, the St. Petersburg Times reported. He was
suffering from shortness of breath and irritated lungs and eyes.
Newton
created a chlorine gas cloud when he combined bleach and an
ammonia-based product to "make a stronger bathroom cleaner," St.
Petersburg Fire and Rescue spokesman Lt. Joel Grenata told the paper.
Fire
and hazardous materials teams were called to Newton's home. They
ventilated the home and scrubbed the walls.
Chlorine
gas has been used as a weapon of mass destruction and exposure to it
can cause severe illness or death. Authorities warn
consumers never to mix bleach and ammonia when using cleaning products.
Go
Organic and Eat Fresh Foods
Most
people prefer their foods free of pesticides and toxic
chemicals, for obvious reasons. Pesticides and toxic chemicals are
increasingly linked to serious health problems – especially for our
children, whose developing bodies are more vulnerable to chemical
exposures.
We'd
like to believe that our government is policing the safety of our food
and the containers it comes in, but it’s not.
Our advice is to limit your family’s
exposure to:
1. Pesticides - Buy organic or
low-pesticide fruits and veggies
2. Two common toxic chemicals - BPA and PFCs - by avoiding food
containers that contaminate
3. Growth hormones - by choosing more natural meat and dairy products.

Probiotics
Essential in Disease Prevention and Good Health
Did
you realize that about 70% of your immune system lies in your
intestinal tract? This includes the intestinal glands, mucosa, and
mucosa-associated lymphoid system of the gastrointestinal tract. It
is vital that the intestinal flora maintain optimal levels of
Probiotics or "good bacteria" to maintain a vibrant immune system.
Probiotics populate our gastrointestinal (GI) tract and ward off
foreign invaders from taking over. Probiotics also help us take in and
utilize the nutrition from the foods we eat and supplements we take.
Our
body is naturally populated with healthy Probiotics but things such as
toxins in our environment, poor diet, drinking chlorinated water,
stress, pesticides, and antibiotics, just to name a few, all work to
kill off the good flora. We can find Probiotics in foods we eat and
through supplementation in the form
of probiotic powder, liquid or capsules.
Foods that support Probiotic growth are found in dairy products such as
cheeses and yogurt. To further support these foods and encourage
probiotics from these dairy products to multiply even further one can
add spices, tea, red wine, berries, apples and beans to the diet.
There
is a growing body of scientific evidence that suggests that one can
treat and even prevent some illnesses with foods and supplements
containing certain kinds of live bacteria. Probiotics have many known
uses and benefits including
Allergy
Cancer
Diarrhea
Elevated Blood Cholesterol
Helicobacter pylori
Hypertension
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Immune System Modulation
Kidney Stones
Lactose Intolerance
Necrotizing Enterocolitis
Oral Health
Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth
Staying Healthy
Vaginosis
The
August issue of Pediatrics cites a study concluding that Probiotics
have been shown to be a safe effective way to reduce fever,
rhinorrhea, and coughincidence and duration
and antibiotic prescription incidence,as well
as the number of missed school days attributable toillness,
for children 3 to 5 years of age.
Farmworkers and their families pay
for the cheap cost of California
produce in more ways than one. Not only do they face low wages and
harsh working conditions, but they also endure health effects from the
hundreds of millions of pounds of pesticides and fumigants dumped onto
fields near their homes annually.
Now pesticides in private well water
have been linked to Parkinson's
disease, adding to the list of long-term health risks for people in
agricultural areas.
Rural residents who drink from
private wells are up to twice as likely
to develop Parkinson's from certain pesticides, including methomyl,
chlorpyrifos and propargite, a UCLA study has found. People with
Parkinson's were more likely to have consumed water from private wells,
and had done so for 4.3 years longer on average than people who did not
have the disease. (Entire Story)
Thoughts:
Chemical pesticides
are neurotoxins which kill insects by attacking their neural
systems. These neurotoxins also affect the neural
system of humans
and pets. Additionally, these
chemicals challenge our liver (an important organ of
detox) and send our endocrine system into chaos. (I
refer you to a book called Silent Spring).
Each shoe that steps
on a chemically pesticide sprayed lawn and then steps
on your carpet has now brought these neurotoxins into your home where
children, grandchildren, and pets play on the floor. Some of
these chemicals take years to break down.
Common
Household Pesticides Linked To Childhood Cancer Cases
Acute
lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a malignant disease of the bone
marrow, is the most common cancer diagnosed in children. In fact,
nearly one third of all pediatric cancers are cases of ALL. Although
this form of cancer can be cured in many cases, in the worst case
scenarios the cancer crowds out normal cells in the bone marrow,
metastisizes to other organs and takes the lives of about 15 percent of
the youngsters it attacks. What triggers so many kids, usually between
the ages of three and seven, to develop this cancer in the first place?
A new study just published in the August issue of the journal Therapeutic
Drug Monitoring raises the suspicion that commonly used
household pesticides are the cause.

Harvard
BPA Study Looks at Exposure from Hard Water Bottles
Dangerous estrogen mimicker,
bisphenol A (BPA)
is making headlines again for its adverse health effects. According to
the University Chronicle, the controversial chemical was found in
participants who drank from hard water bottles, citing a Harvard School
of Public Health study.
In only one week of exposure to drinking water
out of these bottles,
the participants’ BPA levels increased by an astounding two-thirds.
Balsy Kasi, a professor of Environmental and Technical studies at SCSU
noted what we have long been saying, that BPA is an endocrine disrupter
hinder hormonal processes, wrote the University Chronicle.
